This exhibit features rarely exhibited art and objects from
the museum's permanent collection relating to war and
wartime. The exhibit will focus on the Revolutionary War,
the War Between the States, WWI & WWII, highlighting
historical connections to the Pee Dee.

Several items will be on display for the first time,
including pre-Revolutionary War land grants for early
settlers in the Pee Dee area, letters written by German
POW's detained in Florence during WWII and a Nazi
officer's jacket and regalia. Also on display will be
French lithographs from WWI artist Lucien Jonas and a
drawing by 19th century painter Eugene Delacroix.
The exhibit also contains two prints from the Hiroshima series by
American artist Jacob Lawrence, one of the most significant
artists of the Harlem Renaissance. Lawrence was also involved
with Works Progress Administration, an agency which grew out
of the New Deal under Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

"The exhibit really covers all aspects of the museum's vision
and its mission," said museum curator Stephen Motte. "These
objects bring with them connections to Pee Dee that go as far
back as the Napoleonic Wars. I believe people will be surprised
to see how connected this area is to major historical events.

It's not just about the objects themselves, but the stories
they express. Although this exhibit is large in its scope, it is only
one perspective taken on one fraction of the museum's
holdings.

“This exhibit is one of many perfect examples relating to a
statement made by Lucy Crisp, director of the Florence
Museum from 1957 - 1963.  ‘The growth of museum
collections, like the growth of an oak tree, goes on gradually
and, for the most part, so quietly as to attract little notice by
many until the day comes when there is a splendid oak tree
lifting its arms against the sky; or a museum with great
collections whose values are almost immeasurable.’”
Andrew R. Stout, Museum Director.
